Description

This Classic Old Fashioned Pumpkin Bread recipe is the perfect autumnal treat. Moist, warmly spiced, and incredibly flavorful, it’s a comforting bread that fills your kitchen with the aroma of fall. Enjoy it sliced as a snack, alongside a cup of coffee, or as a delightful addition to your holiday table.

Ingredients

  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

  • 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg

  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves

  • 1 teaspoon baking soda

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar

  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil

  • 2 large eggs

  • 1 (15 ounce) can pumpkin puree

  • 1/2 cup water

  • Optional: 1 cup chopped nuts (such as walnuts or pecans)

  • Optional: 1/2 cup raisins or chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×5 inch loaf pan.

  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, baking soda, and salt.

  3. In a separate bowl, combine the sugar, vegetable oil, and eggs. Mix well until smooth.

  4. Add the pumpkin puree and water to the wet ingredients and mix until well combined.

  5. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.

  6. If using, fold in the chopped nuts, raisins, or chocolate chips.

  7. Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan.

  8. Bake for 50-60 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.

  9. Let the bread cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

  10. Slice and serve.

Notes

Variations: For a richer flavor, consider adding 1/2 teaspoon of ground ginger to the spice mixture. You can also add a cream cheese swirl by dolloping small spoonfuls of cream cheese mixed with a bit of sugar on top of the batter before baking and swirling it with a knife.

Tips for Preparation/Serving: Ensure the ingredients are at room temperature for a smoother batter. Let the bread cool completely before slicing for easier handling and cleaner cuts. It tastes even better the next day. It can also be lightly toasted.

Intolerances/Allergies: This recipe contains gluten, eggs, and may contain nuts if added. For a gluten-free option, use a gluten-free flour blend. For a vegan option, replace the eggs with flax eggs (1 tablespoon of ground flaxseed mixed with 3 tablespoons of water per egg).

Adjustments: Adjust the spices according to taste. If you prefer a less sweet bread, reduce the sugar by 1/4 cup. Add or substitute other kinds of nuts for your preference, use dried cranberries instead of raisins.
